Veneto’s spumantes and sparkling wines

The winegrowing region of Veneto, in north-eastern Italy, is known above all for the semi-sparkling version of its Prosecco. This region, with a rich history, culture and breathtaking landscapes produces a variety of magnificent sparkling wines which differ in terms of the varieties and production techniques used to make them. Lovers of sparkling wine will particularly appreciate Veneto, which enjoys varieties of grapes and a microclimate that are well suited to their production. Extending from the Alps to the coast, Veneto contains a chain of hills near the eastern Alps, and vast plains to the south.

What are Veneto’s most famous sparkling wines?

There are many different styles in the realm of sparkling wine: from refreshingly light and fruity, to complex and dry in texture, with a variety of aromas. However, one of Veneto’s most famous and elegant sparkling wines is Prosecco Superiore di Valdobbiadene. These fine sparkling wines are produced with Gleraas the main grape variety, and are stylish and balanced with a straw yellow hue and fine perlage. Another famous sparkling wine from Veneto is Prosecco Rosé, a versatile, drinkable, juicy Prosecco produced from Glera and Pinot Noir grapes. Its hue is a soft, bright pink, and it offers heady aromas followed by a fresh, dynamic palate with attractive intensity.

Veneto’s best sparkling wines

When we talk about the best sparkling wines from Veneto, it is impossible not to think of the Cantina Col Vetoraz winery, located in the heart of the Valdobbiadene DOCG zone. It is interesting to note that the Miotto family has been involved in growing grapes for Prosecco Superiore and Cartizze Superiore since the first half of the 19th century, always keeping faith with local tradition. Moreover, Cantina Adami, situated in the small village of Colbertaldo, has a family tradition in viticulture, passed down from father to son. This winery is known for its great contribution to the excellent quality of the sparkling wines of Veneto, but also for ensuring the utmost respect for the surrounding natural environment and the territory

Which Veneto sparkling wines for which pairings?

The beauty of Prosecco is that it is an extremely versatile wine that can be paired with a vast range of foods and dishes. This extremely famous wine is perfect for aperitifs but also ideal for accompanying the whole meal. The general rule when pairing Prosecco with food is that the flavours must complement or contrast with each other. With its marked acidity and natural sweetness, a sparkling wine from Veneto thus goes best with acidic, sweet, rich and savoury flavours, such as cured meats and cheeses. Nevertheless, following this reasoning, a pairing with fish and shellfish or spicy oriental dishes may also be considered a great choice.
