TASTING NOTES

A very young company that has managed to establish itself after just a few years as a benchmark for the wines of a region, but also of southern Italy as a whole. Its pioneering early vintages are remembered, where the company produced garage wines. Literally: until 2016, the winery was located inside a garage annex belonging to the owner. Vintages in which the conscientious, even maniacal, use of Primitivo, processed strictly biodynamically, earned its ES the highest quality of Primitivo di Manduria. And its fame as well: in 2008 the bottle appeared at the centrepiece during the G8 summit, paired with cheeses. ES that in Freudian terms recalls the unconscious, that instinctive and passionate part from which the Puglian winemaker inspires his production. Primitivo di Manduria Es comes from the typical red soil of the area, from grapes cultivated using the bush-vine system, necessary to cope with the relentless heat of Manduria. Irrigation and fertilisation are strictly prohibited. Harvesting begins at the end of August, after leaving the grapes to dry slightly. After careful sorting on the table, the grapes are placed in stainless steel to macerate on the skins for 15 to 20 days, then racked and matured for nine months in barriques, equally divided between first and second fermentation. And finally stabilisation, for a further nine months, in the bottle. A sparkling ruby red, heralding a bouquet built on sultanas and ripe red berry fruits, underpinned by tobacco and spices. On the palate, complexity is matched by a perfect balance between flavour and fullness, surrounded by perfectly composed tannin that culminates in an invigorating minty finish. The preferred pairing with cheeses of heads of state can undoubtedly extend to first and second courses based on red meat, including those with substantial structure. Read more Read less
THE WINERY

Gianfranco Fino

A meticulous search to find the perfect vineyard has led to the rise of Gianfranco Fino's winery, which began in 2004. Taking into account precise characteristics that could give his wine a unique personality, the choice fell on a fifty-year-old Primitivo vineyard in Puglia. Gradually, with the intention of protecting old vineyards and keeping their uniqueness alive, Gianfranco Fino's holdings have expanded to include vineyards between 50 and 90 years old, lying on red soil and rocky outcrops. Together with his wife Simona, he takes great care and attention with each vine, from which he ensures a low yield in order to preserve its exceptional nature. In the Gianfranco Fini winery, interventions are kept to a minimum, favouring only those essential to the natural enhancement of the product, in which the strong territorial identity is inherent. Gianfranco's hard work has been repaid with the great recognition obtained by his Es Primitivo di Manduria Doc, an excellent red wine, and by the title of best Apulian company obtained just a few years after he started his business. Name and address of producer/distributor: Gianfranco Fino - contrada Lella, sn, 74024 Manduria (TA). Products from this winery should be stored in a cool, dry place away from heat sources.
