The history of the Nino Negri winery stretches back a long way and is inextricably linked to the winemaking evolution of Valtellina. It all began in 1897 when Nino Negri decided to start a wine-making business in Chiuro, in the province of Sondrio. Growth continued steadily over the following decades, and by the post-war period it was one of the most promising in the area. After several changes of ownership, it now owns 33 hectares in the most prestigious areas, including Inferno, Grumello and Fracia, in the heart of Valgella, and has an average annual production of 800,000 bottles. The region’s flagship grape is a local variant of Nebbiolo known here as Chiavennasca. Vigna Ca’ Guicciardi is vinified as a red wine using pump-overs and delestage, followed by ageing for at least 12 months in medium-sized oak barrels. It is then aged for a further 6 months in the bottle. E=100 ml: 311 kJ / 75 kcal
A brilliant ruby red colour of good intensity, with an intense aroma of ripe red fruit, dominated by notes of black cherry and redcurrant, and spices such as liquorice, cloves and cinnamon. On the palate, the tannins are rich and enveloping, the result of ripening in a warm, sunny environment.
Ideal with roast red meat, lamb, kid, game or mature cheeses.
To fully appreciate its style, this wine should be served at a temperature of 16–18°C.
