The history of the Nino Negri winery stretches back a long way and is inextricably linked to the winemaking evolution of Valtellina. It all began in 1897 when Nino Negri decided to start a wine-making business in Chiuro, in the province of Sondrio. Growth continued steadily over the following decades, and by the post-war period it was one of the most promising in the area. After several changes of ownership, it now owns 33 hectares in the most prestigious areas, including Inferno, Grumello and Fracia, in the heart of Valgella, and has an average annual production of 800,000 bottles. The region’s flagship grape is a local variant of Nebbiolo, known here as Chiavennasca. The Sforzato di Valtellina 5 Stelle is a Lombardy red made from 100% Chiavennasca grapes and is one of the winery’s most prestigious wines. Following a late harvest, the grapes are first left to dry for at least 90 days, followed by fermentation and finally ageing in barriques for 16 months, plus a further 6 months in the bottle.
Deep ruby red in colour, the nose reveals notes of dried flowers and black fruit jam, with a finish of vanilla, cocoa and coffee. On the palate, it is intense, full-bodied and warm, with an elegant finish of spices and plum.
A wine for special occasions; we recommend pairing it with braised red meats or game.
To fully appreciate its style, this wine should be served at a temperature of 16–18°C.
