TASTING NOTES

Although the current owners, descendants of the Ricci family, have been here since 1941, this history of Villa Pandolfa goes back much further. Oil, honey, and wine – of course – were already produced here as early as the 1700s. The wine is produced from grapes which were originally called Sanginese but now have a name which is much better known: Sangiovese. The winery is located in Fiumana di Predappio in the Province of Forlì-Cesena, a part of Emilia Romagna which is known historically for the cultivation of this grape. Today, the Pandolfa winery owns 40 hectares of vineyards on hills at an altitude of between 150 and 400 metres above sea level on terrain rich in chalky marl. In recent years, the company has made significant progress in environmental sustainability, and in 2018 it started the switch to organic farming. The notable feature of this wine is the reference to the Renaissance on its label combined with a colour palette reminiscent of the 1950s. The design makes the bottles easily recognisable and practically little works of art in their own right. This Rubicone Ginevra IGT is an Emilia Romagna rosé wine based on Sangiovese grapes. The vineyards are located in Fiumana di Predappio at between 80 and 120 metres above sea level on soils with a high content of brown clay. The must spends a really short period of time in contact with the skins, as little as six hours. Ageing, however, takes six months, with the wine resting on the fine lees before bottling takes place. A beautiful soft pink colour, this wine has notes of yellow and small red berry fruits on the nose. In the mouth, it is fresh and full-flavoured with reflections of the aromas perceived on the nose. This is a wine that could happily be consumed every day and is ideal for pairing with white meats and vegetarian cuisine. Read more Read less
THE WINERY

Pandolfa

Among hills covered with vines, cherry and olive trees, in the village of Fiumana di Predappio, in Emilia-Romagna, stands the majestic Villa Pandolfa, built in 1700 by the Marchesi Albicini. It was here, in the 1940s, that the Ricci family started a flourishing agricultural business that places it among the most renowned producers of Sangiovese. Surrounding the Pandolfa estate are some 40 hectares of estate-owned vineyards, lying on soft hills all between 150 and 400 metres above sea level, guaranteeing a breezy climate. The soil from which they draw nourishment is characterised by a calcareous composition, rich in mineral salts, with clays of different colours and densities, ranging from grey-brown to ochre. Recently, the Pandolfa farm has also decided to make a commitment to environmental sustainability, converting much of its production according to organic farming principles. After the harvest, an ageing period of at least 6 months follows in the Pandolfa wine cellar to ensure the right full flavour for the important reds, whites and rosés. After this time, Pandolfa wines are transferred into characteristic bottles, bearing images of works of art. It is a reminder of both the Renaissance and the 1950s, symbolising the producer's connection with art and history. Inside Villa Pandolfa, in fact, splendid frescoes and even a room in which the poet Giosuè Carducci used to stay are still preserved. Name and address of producer/distributor: Pandolfa - Via Pandolfa, 35 47016, Fiumana (FC). Products from this winery should be stored in a cool, dry place away from heat sources.
