Giacomo Conterno’s Barolo Riserva Monfortino represents one of the finest expressions of Nebbiolo from the Langhe and is produced exclusively in vintages deemed exceptional. The grapes come from the historic vineyards of Monforte d’Alba, cultivated with very low yields and great attention to manual labour. Harvesting takes place at full phenolic ripeness. Fermentation is traditional, with long maceration on the skins in wooden vats, without excessive temperature control, following a strictly classical philosophy. Ageing is extremely long and takes place exclusively in large oak barrels for several years, allowing the wine to evolve slowly and achieve extraordinary complexity and longevity. Monfortino is an uncompromising Barolo, made to stand the test of time.
On the nose, it is deep, complex and constantly evolving, with notes of wilted rose, violet, cherries in alcohol and plum, followed by hints of liquorice, tobacco, spices, tar and earthy and balsamic nuances. The palate is monumental: austere, powerful and perfectly balanced, with dense, incisive tannins, vibrant freshness and an exceptionally long finish. A wine of extraordinary structure and finesse, capable of evolving for decades.
A wine for special occasions and meditation, ideal for important moments and dedicated tastings. It pairs well with full-bodied dishes such as braised meats, stews, game, elaborate red meats and very mature cheeses. It is also splendid when tasted on its own, to appreciate every nuance.
To fully appreciate its style, this wine should be served at a temperature of 16–18°C.
