Founded in the early 1900s in Monforte d'Alba by a family of winegrowers, Giacomo Conterno winery quickly earned a great reputation for producing wines from Nebbiolo and Barbera grapes, which are still cultivated according to traditional systems, thereby enhancing the expression of nature to the fullest. The first label of Barolo Monfortino appeared in 1924 and represents a deep and territorial piece of Langa. It comes from a selection of the best Nebbiolo grapes located in the Francia vineyard, the same vineyard from which Barolo and Barbera Cascina Francia, two other historic Conterno wines, obtain their fruits. After meticulous sorting of the best grapes, the first fermentation takes place in large oak vats followed by long macerations using the submerged cap technique, as is tradition. It is then transferred to large Austrian wooden barrels where it undergoes malolactic fermentation, then ages for 6 years before being bottled. Barolo Riserva Monfortino exhibits a bright, iridescent garnet red colour in the glass. The nose is a poignant portrait of Langa, dominated by scents of rosehips, violets and cherries. Tasting this is a special experience, with a very long finish and persistence. To be enjoyed at least once in a lifetime, either in front of the fire or paired with blue or mature cheeses.
