Hofstatter is a historic Alto Adige winery, which operates using techniques that combine tradition with an ongoing quest for innovation. Given the exceptional quality of the wines it produces, this aim is easily achieved every year and gives a voice to this terroir’s authentic personality. The winery is headed up by Martin Foradori, heir to an ancient family of winemakers, who, thanks to careful and environmentally-friendly growing methods, creates red and white wines of enormous expressive power, offering balance and elegance. Alto Adige Pinot Noir Barthenau Vigna Sant'Urbano is made from grapes harvested and selected by hand, and stored in small crates to keep the grapes intact. 75% of the grapes are destemmed, another 25 per cent remain intact for barrel fermentation. This process is followed by a day of maceration and then about 10 days of fermentation, with the skins in continuous contact with the must. Maturation in wood takes place in small French oak barrels for the first 12 months. After this, the different barrels are blended into one large oak barrel where the wine ages for an additional 8 months. After bottling, the wine rests in the bottle for 8 months at the Barthenau estate cellars before being marketed. In the glass, this wine is deep ruby red in colour, emanating an elegant bouquet of red forest fruit and sweet spices, followed by a subtle undertone of vanilla. On the palate, this wine is silky, almost caressing, following in the tradition of great Pinot Noirs, characterised by perfectly integrated tannins and an uncommon aromatic concentration of small berry fruits. The perfect bottle for an important occasion, to be paired with red meat or game dishes, as well as a plate of cheeses that are not too overpowering, and that work well with the elegance of the wine.
