An aperitif is the best time of day to relax, laugh and chat with friends. It is a special moment that always deserves the best aperitif wine, whatever its characteristics. Traditionally, an aperitif “warned” the palate and stomach that a meal was about to come, thanks to the combination of acidity and bitterness in the drinks. This has not changed: the best aperitif wine is usually designed to stimulate your appetite without lying heavy on the stomach. While a digestif completes an occasion, the aperitif wine gets it started! The good thing about an aperitif is that you can drink anything your heart desires. The most famous are sparkling wines and white wines, although red wines and rosé wines are also excellent for aperitifs.
Wine or sparkling wine? What to choose for an aperitif?
Thanks to their lightness, fruity flavour and pleasant freshness, sparkling wines are always one of the first choices for an aperitif. What makes sparkling wines for an aperitif unique is that you can easily pair them with everything: from seafood to cheese and cured meats. White wines for an aperitif also invigorate the senses and mind. A light, fresh-tasting and fruity white wine with good acidity will always liven up an aperitif. It will go well with octopus salad, fresh cheese, and vegetables. If you feel really lost in the world of wine, did you know that an aromatic and herbaceous Sauvignon works every time?
The best sparkling wines for an aperitif with friends
One of the most popular choices is definitely Prosecco, an excellent sparkling wine to drink as an aperitif and with dishes with a simple and delicate flavour. Prosecco è has been an integral part of Italian culture for a long time and is produced using the Charmat-Martinotti method, mainly from Glera grapes. Another famous sparkling aperitif wine – and one that is significantly more exclusive – is Franciacorta, produced using the traditional Metodo Classico. The different methods are responsible for the size and consistency of the bubbles, amongst other things. The perlage produced using the Charmat-Martinotti method creates bigger bubbles that feel like they are tickling the mouth, while the Metodo Classico leads to smaller bubbles with a soft and sophisticated consistency.
White, rosé or red wine for an aperitif?
If you love white wine for an aperitif with voluptuous aromas of fresh fruit and herbs, indulge yourself and choose from some excellent wines like Gewurztraminer, Chardonnay e Vermentino, to name but a few. Red aperitif wines are a niche choice but if you know what to opt for, a winning one too. Red wine is ideal for pairing with cured meats, mature cheeses and focaccia or crackers. Although it is not the most popular choice, it is still good for an aperitif. It is best to choose a young and light red wine like Barbera, a Pinot Nero or Sangiovese, or why not even a Malvasia or semi-sparkling Lambrusco – an amazing pairing for cured meats. Rosé wines are becoming increasingly popular as an aperitif and are perfect for anyone who cannot decide or wants to choose something a bit different. A good, cold rosé wine can provide the consistency of a red but at the same time offer a refreshing touch like a white. They are also very well suited to dishes like meat and cheese, or fish-based dishes.
