Josko Gravner's passion for oenology began when he started tending the family vineyards at the age of 16. Although vinification took place in stainless steel and in barriques, Josko adopted an old-fashioned technique after a few years: fermentation in terracotta amphorae. This decision, together with other shrewdness in both the vineyard and the wine cellar, make Josko Gravner the symbol of change in the history of Friuli wines.
The Gravner vineyards, almost all of which are owned by the company, extend over more than 30 hectares, at an altitude between 150 and 270 metres above sea level. The main indigenous varieties cultivated are Ribolla gialla and Pignolo Rosso. Processed exclusively by hand and without the use of chemicals, the grapes enjoy favourable exposure and secure their nutrition from a predominantly lime soil.
Respect for the land and the environment can also be felt inside the Gravner winery. Here, following traditional methods dating back to ancient folk customs, the skins undergo long macerations. The highly prized white and red Gravner wines are therefore marketed no earlier than seven years after the harvest, proof of their producer's boundless dedication and constant search for perfection.
