Valpolicella Superiore is one of the great wines of the Veronese tradition, known and loved for its restraint and elegance. Compared to its namesake Valpolicella, it owes its superiority to ageing in oak, which enriches its structure and complexity. Compared to Valpolicella Classico, whose vinification process it follows, this Valpolicella Superiore is aged for 12 months in wood, 50% in Slavonian oak barrels and 50% in barriques. It is a blend of 70% Corvina Veronese and 25% Rondinella grapes. Per 100ml = 330kJ/79kcal
Bright ruby red in colour, it opens with an enticing hint of red berries. Perfectly ripe grapes and great care in the cellar reflect the Allegrini estate’s interpretation of this historic local style. On the nose, notes of cherry stand out clearly against a backdrop of aromatic herbs, white pepper and undergrowth. On the palate, the wine’s fullness is perfectly balanced by the presence of acidity and savoury notes, which lend tension and length to a wine of substance and finesse.
It pairs perfectly with roasted meats, particularly pork, guinea fowl, goat and lamb. Excellent with mushroom-based dishes and medium-aged cheeses.
To fully appreciate its style, this wine should be served at a temperature of 14–16°C.
