THE WINERY

Petra

Petra was founded in the late nineties thanks to the intuition of Francesca Moretti, daughter of Vittorio Moretti, owner of the renowned winery Bellavista in Franciacorta. During a trip to Bordeaux with her father, Francesca fell in love with the atmosphere of the prestigious Châteaux and decided to orientate her studies towards agriculture and enology, to pursue a career in viticulture. The search for the ideal location for the new project brought the Moretti family to Tuscany, and despite the notoriety of Bolgheri in those years, they chose a less known area of the Maremma, but with great potential. In 1997, with the support of professor Attilio Scienza, the family bought 60 hectares in Val di Cornia, near San Lorenzo, in the hinterland of Campiglia Marittima. Over the years, Suvereto has proved to be one of the most promising areas of the Maremma. The Petra winery stands in a natural environment still unspoilt, surrounded by wild landscapes and protected by the Metalliferous Hills, the Montioni Natural Park, the Poggio Tre Cancelli Nature Reserve and the Sterpaia Coastal Park, overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea. The warm and sunny Mediterranean climate is mitigated by the sea breeze, giving a unique luminosity to the estate. The vineyards are located in a rich setting of woods and Mediterranean scrub, which host an extraordinary biodiversity. This extraordinary terroir allows the vine to express itself at its best, with high quality grapes. The red berry varieties reach an optimal ripeness, giving intense and refined aromas. The area has proved to be ideal for Sangiovese, but also for some international Bordeaux grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and for Rhône Valley varieties such as Syrah and Viognier. Thanks to the care of the vineyards and the careful work in the cellar, Petra produces wines of the highest level, characterized by a strong personality, which clearly reflect the peculiarities of the territory. The cellar, designed by the famous Swiss architect Mario Botta, integrates perfectly into the landscape, with a harmonious design that blends in with the natural beauty of the surrounding vineyards. Name and address of producer/distributor: Società Agricola Petra - S. Lorenzo alto, 131, 57028 Suvereto (LI). The products of this cellar should be stored in a cool and dry place away from heat sources.
