TASTING NOTES

Masseto is the purest and most refined expression of Merlot from the Masseto vineyards, located in the heart of the Bolgheri denomination in Tuscany. This wine is one of Italy's most famous and coveted reds, known for its exceptional quality and ability to evolve over time. The grapes are hand-picked with great attention to cluster selection to ensure the highest quality. Harvesting begins at the end of September, with a strict selection in the vineyard to choose only the best fruits. The winemaking process takes place in small stainless steel containers, where the grapes ferment at a controlled temperature to preserve the fruity characteristics of Merlot. Malolactic fermentation occurs in oak barrels, and the wine is then aged for about 18-22 months in high-quality French oak barriques. This long maturation imparts extraordinary complexity and depth to Masseto, developing both its finesse and power. Masseto has a deep, vibrant ruby red color that evolves over time into garnet reflections. This lively red is a distinctive sign of its exceptional quality and long aging. The aromatic bouquet is extraordinarily rich and complex. On the first impact, notes of mature black fruit emerge, such as cherry and plum, accompanied by more elegant nuances of blueberry and black currant. As the wine opens up, more sophisticated aromas of sweet spices, black pepper, tobacco, and a delicate hint of licorice become apparent. Airing also releases more evolved notes of dark chocolate, mint, and subtle hints of leather, signaling its maturation in oak barrels. Masseto is a wine of great structure, yet it remains extremely elegant and smooth. The tannins are soft and silky, perfectly integrated, lending the wine a remarkable finesse. The tannic structure is robust yet harmonious, with a fullness that envelops the palate without ever being overwhelming. The body is rich and expansive, with a long, persistent finish and a surprising mineral freshness that balances the wine's power, rendering it perfectly balanced. Masseto is an extraordinary wine that pairs magnificently with fine dining. It is ideal with red meats such as filet mignon with black pepper, braised beef, or lamb chops, which accentuate its structure and softness. It also pairs wonderfully with game meats such as wild boar, pheasant, or venison, which amplify its spicy notes. Perfect also with more delicate yet intense dishes, like porcini mushroom risotto or tagliatelle with truffle, which highlight the wine's elegance and finesse. For cheese, Masseto pairs beautifully with aged pecorino, castelmagno, and grana padano, which reflect its complexity and structure. Masseto is the perfect wine for special occasions, such as weddings, anniversaries, gala dinners, or any celebration that requires a wine of great prestige. Its elegance and complexity make it ideal for those seeking a wine for meditation, capable of providing a unique sensory experience that evolves over time. Furthermore, thanks to its aging potential, Masseto will continue to evolve and refine itself in the bottle, becoming increasingly complex and fascinating as the years go by. It is an excellent choice for collectors and fine wine enthusiasts, who wish to observe and follow the wine's evolution over time. To fully appreciate all the nuances and complexity of this wine, it is recommended to serve it at a temperature of 18-20°C. This will allow its aromatic complexity, tannic structure, and elegance to fully express, guaranteeing a rich and satisfying tasting experience. It is also advised to decant it about an hour before serving, to promote oxygenation and allow its rich aromatic bouquet to emerge. Read more Read less
THE WINERY

Tenuta dell'Ornellaia

Tenuta dell'Ornellaia is located a short distance from the village of Bolgheri, Tuscany. Of all the wonderful farms in the region, this is perhaps the only one to stand on land praised by one of the greatest Italian poets of the 20th century: In fact, Giosuè Carducci had written a poem about the monumental cypress avenue that leads right to the Bolgheri area and the gentle contours of the hills dotted with vineyards. The area's enduring charm and privileged terroir location has motivated the work of the winery, which is driven to do more and more to produce Tuscan wines that live up to their provenance. A work marked by passion and love for the land and its unique characteristics, which was accompanied by a meticulous study of the latest technologies and techniques. Selective harvesting done by hand, microvinification and storage ageing lead to a flawless end result, perfect in every detail and rich in character. Name and address of producer/distributor: Tenuta dell'Ornellaia - Località Ornellaia, 191. Fraz. Bolgheri, 57022 Castagneto Carducci (LI).
