Barraco winery, located in Marsala, was founded in 2004 as a result of the personal goals of its creator, Nino Barraco. He wanted to express as fully, frankly, and honestly as possible the characteristics of native Sicilian grape varieties and of the soils upon which they are grown. The company is based on a passion for wine and is inspired by the traditional winemaking culture of Marsala. As Nino himself says, his goal is not to create the perfect wine but to make a product which is recognisable, the result of a centuries-long process, and which is closely linked to the land. An artisanal product par excellence: a little dissonance matters not, since it is part of the wine and characterises it. The territory here is clearly greatly influenced by its proximity to the sea, whose salty currents give the wines an amazing full flavour with notes which are always far from ordinary and which directly evoke sensations of the hills overlooking the salt plains. Terre Siciliane Grillo is a hymn to candour itself. The Grillo grapes come from the winery’s oldest vineyard, located on a small hill of sand and red earth. The vineyard was planted in 1975 and is cultivated as head-trained vines. It has an extremely low yield, which allows for fruits that are rich and concentrated. Once the grapes have arrived at the wine cellar, the objective is to bring out the characteristics of the grape variety: maceration on the skins for five days, spontaneous fermentation, and then ageing for nine months in stainless steel prior to bottling. In colour, this wine is a deep straw yellow, and on the nose, notes of aromatic herbs dominate, accompanied by mineral tones and hints of citrus. On the mouth, it is full-flavoured and elegant with intense iodine notes which make it complex and persistent. This Sicilian white wine is perfect for drinking on warm summer evenings, during an aperitif with friends, or perhaps accompanied by fish and shellfish.
