If you’re talking about Vis Amoris, you’re talking about Pigato, the native variety of grape found in the Riviera di Ponente in Liguria. It shares genetic elements and aromatic notes with the Vermentino and Timorasso grapes. It grows on rocky terrain in the province of Imperia that rises up 300 to 400 m above the sea. And from the sea this variety inherits marine and savoury notes that, when combined with the floral aromas and softness typical of Pigato, give it an aromatic profile that is unique in the national wine panorama. The folk at the Vis Amoris winery started with a small vineyard and a dream: to communicate the strength of Pigato to the rest of the world. In 2004, their first wine was released, and the great results encouraged them to buy more land. They now produce seven different types of monovarietal Pigato from three hectares of vines. Guided by the principle of sustainability and respect for the soil, all work in the vineyard is done by hand. They are especially careful to avoid herbicides and chemical fertilisers. Meticulous work in the wine cellar completes the path that leads to the high-quality wines that Vis Amoris now guarantees. But above all, this team is the guardian of a grape variety and its terrain. Riviera Ligure di Ponente Verum is a monovarietal dry white wine produced from Pigato grapes which are sourced in part from the Ciantan vineyard. The soils are mostly clay-rich with some schist rocks, excellent for root development. Fermentation takes place on the skins in accordance with ancient tradition, hence the name ‘Verum’, which means ‘authentic’. The wine is aged in the bottle for six months. A pale straw yellow in colour, it has aromas of fresh fruit and flowers on the nose with hints of marine scents and exotic fruits. In the mouth, it has a full flavour and a notable acidity which nicely balances the floral notes. This versatile Ligurian white wine is suitable for everyday use and can satisfy many different palates thanks to its uncompromisingly bold and fresh character.
