TASTING NOTES

The Donnafugata company was established in Sicily by the Rallo family, whose passion has managed to raise the profile of Sicilian wine all over the world. Etna Rosso Sul Vulcano is a surprising red, made at 750 metres above sea level, on the verdant slopes of Mount Etna, the highest active volcano in Europe, as well as a UNESCO site since 2013. With its eruptions, Etna produces accumulations of lava which over the centuries create fertile farming soil on the sides of the volcano. This land is the birthplace of Nerello Mascalese, a native Sicilian red grape variety, which thrives on Etna in particular. Made mainly with Nerello Mascalese, and a small quantity of Nerello Cappuccio, rigorously harvested by hand, with meticulous selection of the bunches, after fermentation, the wine is aged for 14 months in tanks and partly in second and third passage French oak barriques, subsequently maturing in the bottle for 7 months. With a light ruby red colour, Sul Vulcano has hints of currants and wild strawberries with delicate nuances of cinnamon and nutmeg. With a long and balanced length, Sul Vulcano is perfect with red meats but also appetisers and dishes based on aubergines and mushrooms. Also try it with chicken wings and hamburgers. THE WINERY

Donnafugata

Donnafugata's wines interpret Sicily and passionately describe its sensory universe. Donnafugata was established in Sicily from the initiative of a family with over 160 years of experience in quality wine. The company was founded in 1983 from the Rallo family’s historic wine cellars in Marsala and in the Contessa Entellina vineyards, in the heart of western Sicily. In 1989, Donnafugata arrived on the island of Pantelleria where it began producing sweet natural wines. The name Donnafugata, literally "woman on the run", refers to the story of Queen Maria Carolina, wife of Ferdinand IV of Bourbon, who fled Naples due to the arrival of Napoleon's troops in the early 1800s and took refuge in that part of Sicily where the company vineyards are located today. The face of a woman on each bottle has thus become the symbol of Donnafugata, inspired by the life of Gabriella Rallo, who gave up her job to devote herself to the Contessa Entelline vineyards, a typically male sector, thus becoming a pioneer of Italian female viticulture. With its Sicilian red wines, Donnafugata represents the excellence of Made in Italy, creating a perfect dialogue between art, wine and sustainability. The high quality of these wines is closely linked to a sustainable approach, aimed at safeguarding biodiversity, which is essential for creating authentic wines that are attentive to organic and sustainable viticulture. Name and address of producer/distributor: Donnafugata - Via Sebastiano Lipari, 18, 91025 Marsala (TP). Products from this winery should be stored in a cool, dry place away from heat sources.
