TASTING NOTES

The history of Walter Massa is closely linked to the Timorasso grape and Tortona. We are in Monleale, in the province of Alessandria. At the end of the 1980s, there was a rebirth and recovery of a white grape variety that was being replaced by other grapes like Cortese and Barbera, which were able to produce more with fewer problems in the vineyard. Massa, however, believed in this grape variety and its terroir and, between the 80s and 90s, decided to replant it and successfully make wine from it until, at the beginning of the 2000s, it began to produce the different family crus separately. The Massa vineyards company emerged from a winemaking tradition that had its roots in the 19th century, guided by a great love for its land. In addition to white wines, it also produces Barbera-based red wines, a classic variety of the area. Today, the Timorasso grape is the flagship of the Savoyard wine scene and is making its way internationally. Timorasso is definitely connected with the area of the Tortona hills and has been cultivated here since time immemorial. Its rediscovery brought its vineyard area from 300 hectares in 1987 to the current 1500 hectares. It is a low-productive and fickle variety but is resistant to disease. It produces a very dry, full, firmly structured wine with a high alcohol content that lends itself well to ageing. Colli Tortonesi Timorasso Sterpi is a dry white wine made from 100% Timorasso grapes from the Sterpi vineyard. The wine rests on the lees for 10 months and then 12 months in the bottle. Straw yellow in colour with golden reflections. On the nose it has aromas of peach and pear, acacia and hydrocarbon. On the palate it is enveloping, full and firmly structured. Notes of honey, intense fruit and white flowers. A Piedmontese white to accompany the most beautiful Sunday lunches or to celebrate special occasions. Excellent with fish dishes, including hearty and flavoursome ones, or white veal and pork meats. Read more Read less
THE WINERY

Vigneti Massa

The Massa Vineyards, located in the Colli Tortonesi, are the result of years of love and dedication for wine and the oenological traditions of the Piedmontese territory. Walter Massa, a well-known wine expert in the area, rediscovers and revitalises Timorasso, a native white grape variety. As Vigneti Massa demonstrates, Piedmont is not only the land of great Piedmontese reds, but also of excellent white wines. The vines have been family-owned since 1879, today extending over an area of more than 23 hectares in the hills of Monleale (Alessandria). The land is cultivated with care, with attention not only to the ancient traditions of the place and the Massa family, but also with a focus on protecting the land. Today, the winery offers not only Derthona, the typical white wine and symbol of the winery, but also high-quality red wines produced from the Freisa, Barbera and Croatina vineyards. Today, the Massa vineyards represent a real treasure of the territory, with great potential. Name and address of producer/distributor: Vigneti Massa - Piazza Capsoni, 10, 15059 Monleale (AL). Products from this winery should be stored in a cool, dry place away from heat sources.
