TASTING NOTES

The Castiglion del Bosco company is nestled in the stunning Val d'Orcia, a few kilometres north-west of Montalcino, and boasts 62 hectares of vineyards full of exclusively Sangiovese grapes. The company vineyards have been renowned since the Middle Ages for producing excellent quality wines. Massimo Ferragamo took over in 2003 and since then, Castiglion del Bosco has undergone a phase of historical restoration and system modernisation, to produce wines that both capture the distinct features of the local region and appeal to wine lovers all over the world. This Brunello di Montalcino comes from grapes grown on the Vigneto Capanna, a single plot with clay-rich marl soil where the south-west exposure of the vines, excellent ventilation, as well as a large temperature range between day and night, guarantee perfect ripening. After the harvest and fermentation in steel, the wine rests for 24 months in large barrels and partly in French oak barriques, before further ageing in the bottle. The result is a Tuscan red wine with great character and intensity. This Brunello has an intense, vibrant ruby red colour, revealing an aroma with fruity and floral notes that emerge between elegantly toasted sensations of vanilla and balsamic notes of eucalyptus. The mouthfeel perfectly complements the aroma and reflects the austere and deep character of well-made Brunellos, adding a lively but sweet and refined tannin and a surprisingly fresh finish. A wine perfect over lunch, paired with aged cheese or hearty meat dishes such as wild boar stew with juniper berries. Read more Read less
THE WINERY

Castiglion del Bosco

With its fine Tuscan wines, Castiglion del Bosco is a landmark on the Italian wine scene and one of Italy's leading producers of Brunello di Montalcino. Set like a jewel in the heart of the Val d'Orcia, the winery is one of the founding members of the Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino. Its unusual position on the slopes of a hill, almost hidden from view, makes it the ideal place to get the best from the grapes grown in the vineyards of Castiglion del Bosco and Riparbella. The production process itself tells the story of nature and the human intervention that respects its space and balance: the bunches of grapes are subjected to an initial selection while still in the vineyard, then roll along two sorting tables, where well-trained eyes make a further selection on the best grapes. The berries are then transferred by gravity to the 100-150 hl tanks on the lower level, of a suitable size for the separate fermentation of the grapes from the different vineyards. At the end of the fermentation phase, the wines are transferred to the large, temperature-controlled basement area, where barriques and French oak barrels can be found. The ageing process continues with maturation in the bottle, which, depending on the wine, can last from 6 to 36 months before being released for consumption. The winery is managed by Cecilia Leoneschi, who has been in charge of it since 2003, the year she arrived in Castiglion del Bosco. Name and address of producer/distributor: Castiglion del Bosco - Località, 53024 Castiglion del Bosco SI. Products from this winery should be stored in a cool, dry place away from heat sources.
