TASTING NOTES

Production

Sassoalloro is the forerunner of a new interpretation of Sangiovese in its purest form: a wine that is ready to drink immediately, yet retains the characteristics of the great Tuscan wines. The name Sassoalloro derives from a massive volcanic boulder of exceptional size, around which various legends have grown over the centuries. This red wine is the result of Jacopo Biondi Santi’s innovative vision, which bridges the past and the future with a wine created through a new interpretation of Sangiovese. To produce Sassoalloro, a careful selection of Sangiovese Grosso di Toscana grapes is carried out. Particular attention is paid to fermentation and ageing in barriques. This wine embodies all the hallmarks of the Biondi Santi Winery, both in terms of quality and variety of products, yet at the same time, it represents a departure from the traditional rules of extended ageing. After vinification, the wine rests in untoasted oak barriques from the Tronçais forests for 14 months. These techniques give the Sangiovese Grosso di Montalcino all its merit but with characteristics different from those of the past, which are more in tune with current market demands.

Organoleptic Characteristics

In the glass, it presents a brilliant red colour with purple hues. The nose, refined and intense, comes alive with fresh, fruity aromas, with hints of violet in the background. The palate is soft and velvety, striking a perfect balance between just the right acidity and subtle tannins, leading to a long, elegant finish.

Occasion and Pairing

A bottle to uncork for Sunday lunch, paired with red meat dishes, preferably more elaborate ones.

Serving Temperature

To fully appreciate its style, this wine should be served at a temperature of 16–18°C.

THE WINERY

Jacopo Biondi Santi

Jacopo Biondi Santi is the heir and the continuator of one of the most famous names in Italian wine. He is the son of Franco, the gentleman of Brunello, who has made the Tenuta il Greppo in Montalcino a great international reference point. Today the family history continues at the Castello di Montepò, in the true and noble heart of the Tuscan Maremma, where Jacopo Biondi Santi has been able to combine grape variety and terroir by carrying out an ambitious wine-making project. It is a personal and subjective challenge that began in 1991 with the first harvest of Sassoalloro, wine symbol of the estate. The more than 50 hectares of vineyards of the estate wind on a hilly belt that starts from the north and east to head south-west towards the Tyrrhenian coast. The subsoils have a remarkable mineral wealth, characterized by a strong presence of schists. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and, of course, Sangiovese Grosso BBS11 are cultivated in the rows, a clone selected by the Biondi Santi family in Montalcino and which Jacopo has wisely enhanced at Castello di Montepò. All the stages, from the vines to the winery’s operations, are followed and carefully monitored by Jacopo Biondi Santi and his son Tancredi. The Castle of Montepò is one of the oldest and most important historical testimonies of the territory, also known by the novelist Graham Greene, and the labels produced retain this unmistakably Tuscan charm. A range of wines, created by Jacopo Biondi Santi for the Castello di Montepò, which represents a variety of labels of great elegance: wines made to last, with a personal and contemporary touch. Among the different bottles, Sassoalloro elegantly interprets Sangiovese Grosso BBS11, giving a sipping full-bodied and elegant at the same time. Name and address producer/distributor: Castello di Montepò di Jacopo Biondi Santi, Str. Montepò - 58054 Scansano (GR). The products of this cellar should be stored in a cool and dry place away from heat sources.
