TASTING NOTES

Production

Frank Cornelissen’s Terre Siciliane Magma Rosso represents one of the finest expressions of Nerello Mascalese on Mount Etna. It comes from pre-phylloxera vines trained using the alberello method on the northern slope of the volcano, at high altitudes and on lava soils that are extremely poor in organic matter but rich in minerals. Yields are very low and viticulture follows natural, non-interventionist principles, with the utmost respect for the ecosystem. Harvesting is done by hand and vinification involves spontaneous fermentation, without the addition of selected yeasts, clarification or filtration. Ageing takes place in neutral containers, such as fibreglass tanks or large vats, to preserve the pure expression of the terroir and the vintage.

Organoleptic Characteristics

Visually, it is a bright, transparent ruby red with garnet highlights. On the nose, it is intense, deep and layered, with aromas of small red fruits, cherry, currant and pomegranate, accompanied by floral notes, delicate spices, Mediterranean herbs and powerful mineral hints of lava rock, ash and smoke. On the palate, it is elegant and vibrant, with extremely fine tannins, incisive freshness and extraordinary savouriness. The finish is extremely long, taut and mineral, displaying great precision and energy, capable of evolving magnificently over time.

Occasion and Pairing

An iconic wine with a strong sense of place, ideal for special occasions and for moments of deep, mindful tasting. It pairs beautifully with elegant red meats, light game, substantial Mediterranean dishes and high-quality mature cheeses.

Serving Temperature

To fully appreciate its style, this wine should be served at a temperature of 16–18°C.

THE WINERY

Frank Cornelissen

Frank Cornelissen is one of the most iconic and visionary estates in Etna’s viticulture, a synonym for purity, experimentation, and absolute respect for nature. Founded in the early 2000s by the Belgian-born winemaker of the same name, the estate was created with the goal of expressing Etna in its most authentic and primordial form, free from technical manipulation or compromise. Cornelissen’s philosophy is rooted in the belief that wine should be a direct expression of its land and vintage, a living and evolving entity that tells the soul of a unique place. The vineyards are located on the northern slopes of Mount Etna, between the villages of Solicchiata and Randazzo, at altitudes ranging from 600 to 1,000 meters above sea level. Here, on volcanic soils rich in minerals and microelements, wines of remarkable energy and personality are born, wines that balance the raw power of the volcano with the delicate touch of human care. Many of the vines, some over a century old, are trained in the traditional alberello system and cultivated through natural farming practices, with no chemical inputs and minimal intervention both in the vineyard and in the cellar. Vinification follows spontaneous fermentations, no clarification or filtration, and a very limited use of sulfur. Each wine is the result of an uncompromising pursuit of purity and harmony between substance and place. Among the key grape varieties are Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio for the reds, Carricante and Grecanico Dorato for the whites, interpreted in a distinctive and radical style. The result is deep, vibrant, and authentic wines that embody both the strength and fragility of Etna, capable of stirring emotion and challenging convention. Every bottle from Frank Cornelissen is a sensorial journey into Sicily’s volcanic nature, an ode to freedom and the truth of wine. Producer/distributor name and address: Frank Cornelissen Azienda Agricola – Via Canonico Zumbo, 1 (frazione Passopisciaro), 95012 Castiglione di Sicilia (CT). The cellar products should be stored in a cool, dry place, away from heat sources.
