TASTING NOTES

Owned by the Marchesi Antinori family, the Tormaresca winery in Puglia is carefully managed by the Tuscan family. It is located in one of the most beautiful parts of Alto Salento. The ‘Torcicoda’ part of the name recalls both an instrument once used to groom horses and the luxurious coils of the shoots and leaves of the variety of vine. This wine is made exclusively from Primitivo grapes that are harvested over-ripe. They are destemmed, crushed, and moved into stainless steel tanks where the alcoholic fermentation process commences at a controlled temperature. Maceration takes place with gentle pump-overs and delèstage. Primitivo Torcicorda then undergoes ageing for around 18 months before being bottled and placed onto the market. In the glass, it is an intense ruby red with a slight purple hue. Notes of red fruit, black cherry, and plum dominate on the nose alongside hints of liquorice, vanilla, and tobacco. On the palate, it is soft and broad with a distinctive structure and tannin texture. It has a long finish with an aftertaste of cherries preserved in spirits, making it perfect for pairing with savoury tarts or meat-based main courses. Read more Read less
THE WINERY

Tormaresca

The beginning of vine cultivation along with the production of wine by the Tornatore family dates back to 1865 when the great-grandfather of the current owner took up farming. In 1910, Giuseppe, the current owner's grandfather, built a house with an adjoining millstone in the Piano Fiera district with an adjoining 2 hectares of vineyard, to which a further 2 hectares were added on the northern slope of Etna in the Piano Felci district at an altitude of 1,000 metres above sea level. The Tornatore family has always had a detailed knowledge of the territories of the municipality of Castiglione di Sicilia, since grandfather Giuseppe and uncle Giovanni were appointed cadastral surveyors in the early 1930s, accompanying the topographer to survey parcels, to define boundaries and names of districts. A family, therefore, with deep roots in its territory of origin, which has never neglected its attachment to and respect for it and its traditions in successive generations. Name and address of producer/distributor: Azienda Agricola Tornatore - Via Pietramarina, 8A - CAP 95012 Castiglione di Sicilia. Products from this winery should be stored in a cool, dry place away from heat sources.
