TASTING NOTES

Tradition and family: these are the two key words that sum up the vision of the Monte Santoccio winery. It is a small family-run business which, with its four hectares of vineyards, is located in the heart of the classic area of Valpolicella, more precisely in Fumane. The area, nestled between Lake Garda and the Lessinia mountains, has a long tradition of red wines, and is famous above all for the dried (passito) red grape wine, Recioto. We immediately notice that the philosophy of the company, managed with passion and rigour by Nicola Ferrari with the help of his wife Laura, is to produce quality wines based on tradition. Nicola gained a wealth of experience from working for the winery of Giuseppe Quintarelli, one of the most prestigious producers in the area. The Recioto Amandorlato Stella by Monte Santoccio is obtained from Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella, and Molinara grapes that are slightly over-ripe, carefully selected by hand, and allowed to dry in a drying loft until the end of February. Fermentation takes place in two phases: firstly a cold maceration phase that lasts for one month and then a second extremely slow alcoholic fermentation stage, which also lasts for around a month. The ageing of the wine takes place in 500-litre barrels of French oak for 24 months. The wine has a deep ruby red colour and is simple yet intense on the nose with notes of black fruit jam, candied fruit, and bitter almonds. The balsamic notes have a pleasant length. The palate is full with a sweetness that stops short of being cloying and is, above all, persistent. This is a wine for an important occasion and can be paired perfectly with mature and blue cheeses.
