TASTING NOTES

Production

Passopisciaro was founded in 2000 following an idea by Andrea Franchetti, the renowned producer and owner of Tenuta di Trinoro. The winery is situated on the northern slope of Mount Etna, more precisely in Castiglione di Sicilia, at an altitude of 1,000 metres, and was created by restoring an old baglio. The most widely grown grape is Nerello Mascalese, which, depending on the lava flows and varying altitudes, forms different crus and has the distinctive feature of being ungrafted, meaning it has never been affected by phylloxera; the most commonly used non-native varieties, on the other hand, are Chardonnay, Petit Verdot and Cesanese d’Affile. The completely different profiles of the various vineyard areas, covering a total surface area of 26 hectares at altitudes ranging from 500 to 1,000 metres, are distinct from one another and are known as Contrade. Passopisciaro’s Etna Rosso Passorosso is a Sicilian red wine made from Nerello Mascalese, whose grapes come from the Contrade of Arcuria, Malpasso, Favazza, Guardiola and Feudo di Mezzo, from vines that are almost a century old and situated at altitudes ranging from 500 to 1,000 metres. It is one of the wines that best embodies the identity of the winery and the region; the grapes are fermented for two weeks before ageing in large oak barrels for 18 months. 100 ml: E=372 kJ/88 kcal
