TASTING NOTES

Production

This Bolgheri Vermentino comes from the Grattamacco estate, from a one-hectare vineyard situated on the crest of a hill overlooking the sea between Castagneto Carducci and Bolgheri. It is produced entirely from Vermentino grapes, harvested and selected exclusively by hand. Fermentation takes place partly in stainless steel and partly in barriques, after which the wine is aged for eight months in barriques and a further six months in the bottle before being released onto the market.

Organoleptic Characteristics

Grattamacco’s Vermentino is a rich and multifaceted white wine, capable of surprising the palate with its truly unique balance and lingering finish. It presents a straw-yellow colour of medium intensity, with intriguing greenish hues. On the nose, there are distinct notes of yellow peach, framed by floral hints of chamomile, which give way to balsamic notes of mint and sage. On the palate, it combines freshness and savouriness, underpinned by a remarkable mineral structure. The measured use of oak lends creaminess and sweetness, leading to a finish of excellent length.

Occasion and Pairing

An ideal bottle for an aperitif with friends, where it will be at its best when accompanied by a platter of fresh cheeses placed in the centre of the table.

Serving Temperature

To fully appreciate its style, this wine should be served at a temperature of 10–12°C.

THE WINERY

Grattamacco

Josko Gravner's passion for oenology began when he started tending the family vineyards at the age of 16. Although vinification took place in stainless steel and in barriques, Josko adopted an old-fashioned technique after a few years: fermentation in terracotta amphorae. This decision, together with other shrewdness in both the vineyard and the wine cellar, make Josko Gravner the symbol of change in the history of Friuli wines. The Gravner vineyards, almost all of which are owned by the company, extend over more than 30 hectares, at an altitude between 150 and 270 metres above sea level. The main indigenous varieties cultivated are Ribolla gialla and Pignolo Rosso. Processed exclusively by hand and without the use of chemicals, the grapes enjoy favourable exposure and secure their nutrition from a predominantly lime soil. Respect for the land and the environment can also be felt inside the Gravner winery. Here, following traditional methods dating back to ancient folk customs, the skins undergo long macerations. The highly prized white and red Gravner wines are therefore marketed no earlier than seven years after the harvest, proof of their producer's boundless dedication and constant search for perfection. Name and address of producer/distributor: Gravner - Località Lenzuolo Bianco, 9, 34170 Oslavia, Gorizia (GO). Products from this winery should be stored in a cool, dry place away from heat sources.
