TASTING NOTES

Production

The grapes are harvested by hand into small containers; destemming is carried out to remove the stems and seeds, and finally the must is transferred by gravity into stainless steel vats, ready for alcoholic fermentation. Malolactic fermentation follows, and the wine is then aged for 9 months in large oak barrels and 6 months in the bottle.

Organoleptic Characteristics

Schiava di Girlan is unique, elegant and full-bodied with fruity tannins accompanied by a wonderful savoury character. A wine with great ageing potential, with a red colour tending towards garnet, it reveals aromas of good intensity of red fruits on the nose and spicy notes tending towards bitterness on the finish. On the palate, it is tannic and very long-lasting.

Occasion and Pairing

Thanks to its distinctive characteristics, this wine pairs perfectly with fine pasta dishes.

Serving Temperature

To fully appreciate its style, this wine should be served at a temperature of 16–18°C.

THE WINERY

Girlan

The members of the Giuseppe Mascarello family have been involved in viticulture for over a century and a half, running the Cascina Manescotto in the municipality of La Morra. For a long time, the family imposed strict rules on itself to protect the environment and the land on which the vineyards stand: the Nebbiolo has long been the symbolic and most prized variety in Langhe vinification. In this area of Piedmont, it has been able to find the right combination with a terroir of great vocation, knowing how to express itself at sublime levels in a wine of marked personality, intensity of aromas, great velvety tannins and the possibility of great evolution and endurance over time. The Mascarello e Figlio family's vineyards are located on an estate of about 15 hectares, all of them in the Barolo area. Name and address of producer/distributor: Azienda Agricola Giuseppe Mascarello e Figlio di Mauro Mascarello s.s., Località Borgonuovo, 108, 12060 Monchiero (CN). Products from this winery should be stored in a cool, dry place away from heat sources.
