Mongrana dates back to 2000, when Querciabella decided to pursue a 42-hectare seaside estate in the wilds of Maremma, in the north of Tuscany. Close to the sea, sheltered by the Uccellina plateau and surrounded by nature. Mongrana Rosso made from Sangiovese takes its name from a family of noble knights depicted by Ludovico Ariosto in his masterpiece Orlando Furioso: noble knights with character, a bit like Mongrana. Three native international grape varieties take centre stage: Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The grape varieties are vinified individually and then used to form a blend which then rests in concrete tanks for 10 months until full maturation. Mongrana is a fascinating wine with an intense ruby red colour, aromas of ripe fruit, morello cherry, blueberry and ivy. It is ethereal on the palate: coffee, leather, liquorice enhance a juicy but soft flavour. An easy to drink wine, perfect for taking to a party when you do not know the host, for drinking with friends, ideal with red meats, but also very versatile with Mediterranean dishes.
