This Nero d’Avola from the Planeta winery takes its name from the vibrant purple flowers which grow wild amongst the vineyards vines. This is Menfi DOC land: on the east coast of Sicily around Lake Arancio. It features deep soils, rich in pebbles, at an altitude of up to 400 metres above sea level. The designation includes wines that are produced in the area up to 16 km inland from Sciacca at Tenuta Ulmo, a historic location recently renovated as a winery by the Planeta family. This is a true Nero d’Avola cru, produced from grapes from the oldest vines and vinified as a monovarietal wine. Following the harvest, the Nero d’Avola grapes arrive at the wine cellar where they are fermented in stainless steel tanks. They remain there with the skins for a two-week maceration at a constant temperature of 25 degrees Celsius. After gentle crushing, malolactic fermentation takes place, again in stainless steel vats. From January, the wine rests in large wooden barrels for the next eight months. Nero d’Avola Plumbago is an expressive, characterful wine. It is an invitingly vibrant purple in colour. Aromas of wild blackberries, plums, and incense rise from the glass, becoming sharper on the palate and opening up into notes that are reminiscent of dark chocolate and Sachertorte against a softness of round tannins. This red is perfect for pairing with grilled or smoked red meats or for enjoying over a barbeque with friends.
