Azienda Donnafugata was established in Sicily by the Rallo family, whose passion has raised the profile of Sicilian wine all over the world. Mille e Una Notte (‘A Thousand and One Nights’) is a renowned Donnafugata red wine, produced a few miles away from Palazzo Filangeri di Cutò, the country home of the writer Tomasi di Lampedusa, who, in The Leopard, used the house as the basis for the Donnafugata estate, where Tancredi falls in love with the beautiful Angelica Sedara. Mille e Una Notte is a wine which whisks you away to a land of dreams. It is the result of carefully tailored viticulture which uses only the best bunches of Nero d’Avola, Petit Verdot, and Syrah grapes harvested by hand into crates on the Contessa Entelina estates. The wine is aged for 13 months in French oak barriques followed by 20 months in the bottle. The company’s masterpiece, this wine has been an icon of Italian excellence throughout the world since 1995. A deep ruby red in colour, it has an intense bouquet characterised by hints of blackberry and mulberry with elements of balsamic and liquorice. A beguiling wine with a certain softness, its tannin is surprisingly smooth and its finish is long and persistent. This is a wine for important occasions. It can be paired with red meats, lamb, fillet steak, and pappardelle al ragù. It is a tribute to the fiery masterpiece of Oriental literature, capable of telling a thousand and one tales.
