TASTING NOTES

Production

The Donnafugata winery was founded in Sicily by the Rallo family, who, driven by passion, have succeeded in raising the profile of Sicilian wine worldwide. Ben Ryé is one of the most beloved Italian sweet wines on the wine scene. A refined Zibibbo passito produced on Pantelleria, a small island straddling Sicily and North Africa, also known as the Black Pearl of the Mediterranean. Indeed, the very lava stones that characterise it reveal the volcanic nature of the island, which is also famous for its scarcity of water and the strong, constant winds that blow there relentlessly all year round. Ben Ryé, from the Arabic, literally means ‘Son of the Wind’. The harvest is carried out by hand and lasts around four weeks. During the fermentation of the must, the dried grape berries are added in several stages, over a total period of about one month. The wine is aged for approximately 8 months in stainless steel and a further 12 months in the bottle. 100 ml: 691 kJ/165 kcal

Organoleptic Characteristics

With a golden colour and luminous amber highlights, Ben Ryé offers an intense bouquet of apricot and candied orange, dried figs, honey and hints of Mediterranean scrub, whilst on the palate it delivers its proverbial freshness that balances the sweetness.

Occasion and Pairing

Excellent with blue cheeses and foie gras, but also worth trying with dry pastries and artisanal chocolate. Extraordinary on its own as a meditation wine.

Serving Temperature

To fully appreciate its style, this wine should be served at a temperature of 10–12°C.

THE WINERY

Donnafugata

Donnafugata's wines interpret Sicily and passionately describe its sensory universe. Donnafugata was established in Sicily from the initiative of a family with over 160 years of experience in quality wine. The company was founded in 1983 from the Rallo family’s historic wine cellars in Marsala and in the Contessa Entellina vineyards, in the heart of western Sicily. In 1989, Donnafugata arrived on the island of Pantelleria where it began producing sweet natural wines. The name Donnafugata, literally "woman on the run", refers to the story of Queen Maria Carolina, wife of Ferdinand IV of Bourbon, who fled Naples due to the arrival of Napoleon's troops in the early 1800s and took refuge in that part of Sicily where the company vineyards are located today. The face of a woman on each bottle has thus become the symbol of Donnafugata, inspired by the life of Gabriella Rallo, who gave up her job to devote herself to the Contessa Entelline vineyards, a typically male sector, thus becoming a pioneer of Italian female viticulture. With its Sicilian red wines, Donnafugata represents the excellence of Made in Italy, creating a perfect dialogue between art, wine and sustainability. The high quality of these wines is closely linked to a sustainable approach, aimed at safeguarding biodiversity, which is essential for creating authentic wines that are attentive to organic and sustainable viticulture. Name and address of producer/distributor: Donnafugata - Via Sebastiano Lipari, 18, 91025 Marsala (TP). Products from this winery should be stored in a cool, dry place away from heat sources.
