TASTING NOTES

Production

It was 1964 when Lodovico Montresor welcomed Professor Vescia of the University of Brescia and Engineer Turlini to the family villa in Peschiera: two friends with whom he shared an idea he wished to put into practice – to give a geographical identity to a wine known since the time of Catullus and produced from Trebbiano di Lugana, known locally as Turbiana. So when we speak of the Ottella winery, we are also speaking of the history of Lugana, as they were born side by side from the same hands. The winery gained new momentum in the mid-1980s, when his son Francesco Montresor, fresh from his law degree, joined his father; in 1993, his other son Michele also joined the business. Ottella now comprises 90 hectares in Lugana, to which 20 hectares in Valpolicella have been added, on the magnificent hills of Romagnano in Valpantena, and continues to shape the history of Lugana.Ottella’s Lugana DOC is a Venetian white wine made from 100% Turbiana (Trebbiano di Lugana) grapes from vineyards in San Benedetto di Lugana; the grapes come from the estate’s most suitable vineyards, characterised by a high content of white clay. The harvest takes place in the second half of September and is carried out by hand. Fermentation is slow at a controlled temperature (14°–18°); ageing takes place for 5 months on the lees and fine yeasts. 100 ml: E=310 kJ/75 kcal

An everyday wine, perfect as an aperitif, though it is at its best paired with shellfish and fish.

THE WINERY

Ottella

For no less than three generations, Cantina Paltrinieri, a reference point of excellence among the wineries of Emilia-Romagna, has been producing a Lambrusco di Sorbara doc from carefully selected and skilfully vinified grapes, exclusively from its own vineyards. Alberto Paltrinieri, the current manager, keeps the family tradition alive by applying the valuable teachings received from his father and grandfather every day. The Paltrinieri vineyards extend over almost 15 hectares, bordered by the Secchia and Panaro rivers, which give the soil a peculiar sandy composition. Since 1926, the Paltrinieri family's philosophy has been to cultivate the vines with respect for the surrounding environment, limiting interventions to those that are strictly necessary. The same principles are also adopted in the Paltrinieri winery, where dry wines with a good balance of acidity and minerality are obtained. Thanks also to the collaboration of oenologists Attilio Pagli and Leonardo Conti, the vinification process is handled with great care. Paltrinieri wines, mostly red, appear as a genuine expression of the territory from which they come and of the passion infused by those who produce them. Name and address of producer/distributor: Cantina Paltrinieri - Via Cristo 49, 41030 Bomporto, Sorbara (MO). Products from this winery should be stored in a cool, dry place away from heat sources.
