TASTING NOTES

Jacopo Biondi Santi's winery represents the great international point of reference, located in the Tuscan region of Maremma. The winery in Castello di Montepò has an area of about 220 hectares planted with vines, vineyards that stretch along a hilly strip and go towards the plain of Albinia in the direction of the Tyrrhenian coast. The subsoil is made up of a considerable mineral wealth with vineyards growing Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and obviously Sangiovese too. Sassoalloro is the forefather of a new interpretation of the monovarietal Sangiovese: a label of immediate readiness, which keeps intact the characteristics of the greats of Tuscan wines. The name Sassoalloro derives from an exceptionally large boulder of volcanic origin which generated various legends over the centuries. This red wine is the product of the innovative intuition of Jacopo Biondi Santi, who opens the gate from the past to the future with a wine created through a new interpretation of Sangiovese vinified as a monovarietal. To create Sassoalloro, Sangiovese Grosso di Toscana grapes have to be carefully selected. Particular attention is paid to the fermentation and ageing in barriques. The wine encompasses all the typicality of the Biondi Santi winery both in terms of quality and variety, but, at the same time, we find a change with respect to the rules of long-ageing. After vinification, the wine rests in untoasted wooden barriques made with wood from the Tronçais forest, for 14 months. These precautions give Sangiovese Grosso di Montalcino all its value but with different characteristics from those of the past, becoming more attuned to current market demands. In the glass, it has a bright red colour with purple hues. The nose is fine and intense, coming alive with fresh and fruity aromas and notes of violet in the background. The palate is soft and velvety, in perfect balance between the precise acidity and subtle tannins, which are a prelude to the long and elegant finish. Open a bottle for Sunday lunch, pairing with refined red meat dishes. Read more Read less
THE WINERY

Jacopo Biondi Santi

Jacopo Biondi Santi is the heir and the continuator of one of the most famous names in Italian wine. He is the son of Franco, the gentleman of Brunello, who has made the Tenuta il Greppo in Montalcino a great international reference point. Today the family history continues at the Castello di Montepò, in the true and noble heart of the Tuscan Maremma, where Jacopo Biondi Santi has been able to combine grape variety and terroir by carrying out an ambitious wine-making project. It is a personal and subjective challenge that began in 1991 with the first harvest of Sassoalloro, wine symbol of the estate. The more than 50 hectares of vineyards of the estate wind on a hilly belt that starts from the north and east to head south-west towards the Tyrrhenian coast. The subsoils have a remarkable mineral wealth, characterized by a strong presence of schists. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and, of course, Sangiovese Grosso BBS11 are cultivated in the rows, a clone selected by the Biondi Santi family in Montalcino and which Jacopo has wisely enhanced at Castello di Montepò. All the stages, from the vines to the winery’s operations, are followed and carefully monitored by Jacopo Biondi Santi and his son Tancredi. The Castle of Montepò is one of the oldest and most important historical testimonies of the territory, also known by the novelist Graham Greene, and the labels produced retain this unmistakably Tuscan charm. A range of wines, created by Jacopo Biondi Santi for the Castello di Montepò, which represents a variety of labels of great elegance: wines made to last, with a personal and contemporary touch. Among the different bottles, Sassoalloro elegantly interprets Sangiovese Grosso BBS11, giving a sipping full-bodied and elegant at the same time. Name and address producer/distributor: Castello di Montepò di Jacopo Biondi Santi, Str. Montepò - 58054 Scansano (GR). The products of this cellar should be stored in a cool and dry place away from heat sources.
