TASTING NOTES

Passopisciaro was established in 2000 by Andrea Franchetti, a well-known producer and owner of the Trinoro estate. The winery is located on the northern slope of Etna, specifically in Castiglione di Sicilia, 1,000 metres above sea level, and is a restored fortified farm building. The most cultivated grape is Nerello Mascalese, which here, because of the lava flows and various altitudes, is used to create different kinds of cru. It has the peculiarity of being ungrafted, which means that it has never been affected by phylloxera. In contrast, the most widely used non-native grapes are Chardonnay, Petit Verdot, and Cesanese d'Affile. The completely different profiles of the various vineyard areas, which cover 26 hectares of land at between 500 and 1,000 metres above sea level, are known by the name of the districts, or ‘contrade’. Contrada C di Passopisciaro is a Sicilian red based on the Nerello Mascalese grape from the Chiappemacine district. The vines are between 70 and 100 years old and are situated at an altitude of 550 metres above sea level. The must ferments in stainless steel before being placed into oak barrels for malolactic fermentation. It then undergoes an ageing period of 18 months. In the glass, this wine is a splendid ruby red; on the nose, notes of small red berry fruits and undergrowth mingle with a delicate hint of spice. In the mouth, it is fresh, full-flavoured, and persistent. An excellent wine for Sunday lunches, ideally with roasted or grilled red meats. Read more Read less
