The beautiful landscape of Monferrato is home to one of the most important wineries of the area and, in fact, in all of Piedmont. Azienda Agricola Montalbera was founded at the start of the 20th century in the area between the municipalities of Grana, Castagnole Monferrato, and Montemagno. The winery holds a single body of 100 hectares of vineyards here, along with 10 hectares in the nearby Langhe region, where the Morando family which owns the enterprise has its roots. Montalbera owns about 60% of the Ruchè vineyards in the entire DOC zone (DOCG since 2010). The Morando family has mainly focused on the last of these, saving it from extinction and dedicating many years to enhancing its value, succeeding in creating a Piedmontese red wine with a distinct identity. In the words of Franco Morando: ‘Each year, at Montalbera, we try to interpret each harvest to the fullest, and to give it the perfect balance. I consider Ruchè Riserva Limpronta to be the latest of our jewels. At Montalbera, we were the proponents of the reform of the Ruchè production regulations which took place in 2013, when the innovation of the use of the term “Riserva” was discussed, and we were amongst the first wineries to experiment with the ageing of Ruchè in wood in order to release the expressive capability of a grape variety which has many facets and amazing potential.’ Ruchè di Castagnole Monferrato DOCG Riserva is a well-crafted and elegant ruby red wine with a tendency towards garnet. It has an intense and persistent aroma with typical hints of berries which give way to oriental spices and black pepper. This wine is a sublime sensory sensation with great longevity and excellent drinkability.
