In this hilly territory viticulture dates back to the times of the Etruscans, who between 800 and 500 B.C. dominated this stretch of Tuscany dedicated mainly to mining, but it is to the Middle Ages that we bring back the ruins of the castle of Doglia, called the Terriccio. The modern history of Terriccio began in the first half of the twentieth century, when the estate was acquired by the Marquis Serafini Ferri, family of the current owner. Thanks to Gian Annibale Rossi di Medelana, Castello del Terriccio owes the fame and importance it currently enjoys in the world as a winery, dedicated to the production of high quality wines. After inheriting the acienda in 1975, he decided to re-found it, consecrating it as a place of excellence in vineyards and wines, keeping intact the ancient character and defending a territorial heritage of great value and extraordinary beauty. Today the property has passed to Vittorio Piozzo di Rosignano Rossi di Medelana, only grandson of the cavalier Gian Annibale. Also descended from noble families with large estates in the country that date back to centuries past, Vittorio Piozzo di Rosignano has left behind his past in finance to dedicate himself to the management of the family’s agricultural activities and now to the direct management of Castello del Terriccio. Castello del Terriccio is one of the major agricultural properties of Tuscany: about 1500 hectares in total, of which 65 for vineyards and 40 for olive groves, extended along the northern limit of Maremma Toscana near Bolgheri. The fortunate combination of soil, air and light, make this unique microcosm where they integrate with balance the nature and the intervention of man who, with foresight, has been able to safeguard over time the biodiversity of the territory while maintaining the presence of different crops and spontaneous vegetation next to the vineyards. The choice of varieties to bring to the Terriccio was particularly scrupulous, made with a careful selection of international strains and therefore different from Sangiovese and from the traditional white grapes until then cultivated, glimpseing the possibility of achieving with new vines important results and at the same time able to remain constant on the highest levels of quality. After the Chardonnay introduced in 1988 and the Sauvignon Blanc in 1989, then followed the red berried grapes: Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, which have found a particular expression in the territories of the property, overcoming the results achieved in the places from which they traditionally come. The new vines are immediately able to enhance incredibly the character of the wines and to transmit them all the warmth, brightness and richness of this particular stretch of the Tuscan coast. Tassinaia was born in 1992, the first wine created by Gian Annibale Rossi of Medelana, Shortly after, in 1993 Lupicaia was born, which immediately revealed the disruptive class of the champion and in 2000 saw the light Castello del Terriccio that immediately established itself as the company’s second champion.
