Elena Walch is a leading family-run winery in Alto Adige, the flagship of Italian wine production and internationally renowned. A promoter of quality and innovation, Elena Walch has helped lead the South Tyrolean quality revolution, thus earning great local and international consideration. Pinot Noir’s long history in Alto Adige has strong links with the development of the wine-growing region. Elena Walch's Pinot Nero Ludwig was created in 2001, with grapes harvested from old vines, some of which were also cultivated using the traditional Trentino pergola system. Small batch production of 10,000 bottles reflects the rigorous selection of the plots of land in order to produce a classic, complex Pinot Noir of the highest quality. The grapes used in this pure Pinot Noir wine are harvested in late August, and fermentation takes place partly in stainless steel and partly in wood, where malolactic fermentation also takes place. Next the wine is aged in French oak barriques for 13 months. In the glass, this wine displays facets of intense, bright and concentrated ruby red. It has an intense bouquet of cherries, red currants with a spicy finish of pepper and toasted notes. The tannins are noticeable yet very elegant, delivering freshness and persistence. A wine with great potential. Pairs best with dishes that are not too structured, white meats or red meats cooked according to fairly simple recipes.
