TASTING NOTES

Donnafugata winery was established in Sicily by the Rallo family, whose passion has raised the profile of Sicilian wine all over the world. Lighea by Donnafugata is an elegant and aromatic Mediterranean wine which takes its name from the bewitching siren protagonist of a story by Tomasi di Lampedusa. It is produced exclusively from the Zibibbo (Moscato d’Alessandria) grape, the result of bold viticulture on the island of Pantelleria. This is an island with a complex orography and volcanic soils, cultivated mainly on terraces. The vines are grown as low head-trained bush vines, a type of training recognised by UNESCO as a ‘creative and sustainable’ practice. Following fermentation, the wine ages in stainless steel for two months and is then allowed to mature further for three months in the bottle. In the glass, it is a bright straw yellow with greenish reflections and gives off surprising aromas: from classic notes of orange blossom to lychee and citrus hints of cedar and bergamot. It is fresh and persistent with a pleasantly mineral finish. This wine is ideal for pairing with raw fish in general, shellfish, and tempura. Read more Read less
THE WINERY

Donnafugata

Donnafugata's wines interpret Sicily and passionately describe its sensory universe. Donnafugata was established in Sicily from the initiative of a family with over 160 years of experience in quality wine. The company was founded in 1983 from the Rallo family’s historic wine cellars in Marsala and in the Contessa Entellina vineyards, in the heart of western Sicily. In 1989, Donnafugata arrived on the island of Pantelleria where it began producing sweet natural wines. The name Donnafugata, literally "woman on the run", refers to the story of Queen Maria Carolina, wife of Ferdinand IV of Bourbon, who fled Naples due to the arrival of Napoleon's troops in the early 1800s and took refuge in that part of Sicily where the company vineyards are located today. The face of a woman on each bottle has thus become the symbol of Donnafugata, inspired by the life of Gabriella Rallo, who gave up her job to devote herself to the Contessa Entelline vineyards, a typically male sector, thus becoming a pioneer of Italian female viticulture. With its Sicilian red wines, Donnafugata represents the excellence of Made in Italy, creating a perfect dialogue between art, wine and sustainability. The high quality of these wines is closely linked to a sustainable approach, aimed at safeguarding biodiversity, which is essential for creating authentic wines that are attentive to organic and sustainable viticulture. Name and address of producer/distributor: Donnafugata - Via Sebastiano Lipari, 18, 91025 Marsala (TP). Products from this winery should be stored in a cool, dry place away from heat sources.
