TASTING NOTES

Azienda Donnafugata was established in Sicily by the Rallo family, whose passion has raised the profile of Sicilian wine all over the world. Mille e Una Notte (‘A Thousand and One Nights’) is a renowned Donnafugata red wine, produced a few miles away from Palazzo Filangeri di Cutò, the country home of the writer Tomasi di Lampedusa, who, in The Leopard, used the house as the basis for the Donnafugata estate, where Tancredi falls in love with the beautiful Angelica Sedara. Mille e Una Notte is a wine which whisks you away to a land of dreams. It is the result of carefully tailored viticulture which uses only the best bunches of Nero d’Avola, Petit Verdot, and Syrah grapes harvested by hand into crates on the Contessa Entelina estates. The wine is aged for 13 months in French oak barriques followed by 20 months in the bottle. The company’s masterpiece, this wine has been an icon of Italian excellence throughout the world since 1995. A deep ruby red in colour, it has an intense bouquet characterised by hints of blackberry and mulberry with elements of balsamic and liquorice. A beguiling wine with a certain softness, its tannin is surprisingly smooth and its finish is long and persistent. This is a wine for important occasions. It can be paired with red meats, lamb, fillet steak, and pappardelle al ragù. It is a tribute to the fiery masterpiece of Oriental literature, capable of telling a thousand and one tales. THE WINERY

Donnafugata

Donnafugata's wines interpret Sicily and passionately describe its sensory universe. Donnafugata was established in Sicily from the initiative of a family with over 160 years of experience in quality wine. The company was founded in 1983 from the Rallo family’s historic wine cellars in Marsala and in the Contessa Entellina vineyards, in the heart of western Sicily. In 1989, Donnafugata arrived on the island of Pantelleria where it began producing sweet natural wines. The name Donnafugata, literally "woman on the run", refers to the story of Queen Maria Carolina, wife of Ferdinand IV of Bourbon, who fled Naples due to the arrival of Napoleon's troops in the early 1800s and took refuge in that part of Sicily where the company vineyards are located today. The face of a woman on each bottle has thus become the symbol of Donnafugata, inspired by the life of Gabriella Rallo, who gave up her job to devote herself to the Contessa Entelline vineyards, a typically male sector, thus becoming a pioneer of Italian female viticulture. With its Sicilian red wines, Donnafugata represents the excellence of Made in Italy, creating a perfect dialogue between art, wine and sustainability. The high quality of these wines is closely linked to a sustainable approach, aimed at safeguarding biodiversity, which is essential for creating authentic wines that are attentive to organic and sustainable viticulture. Name and address of producer/distributor: Donnafugata - Via Sebastiano Lipari, 18, 91025 Marsala (TP). Products from this winery should be stored in a cool, dry place away from heat sources.
