TASTING NOTES

When you talk about Biondi Santi, you’re talking about the history of viticulture and winemaking in Italy. No winery is linked as intimately with a DOC zone as Biondi Santi with Brunello di Montalcino. It is a history which dates back to the mid-nineteenth century, when Clemente Santi made his first attempts at vinification and won his first international awards, such as the gold medal at the Paris Universal Exposition of 1867. It was also Santi who created Brunello di Montalcino, imposing extremely restrictive quality parameters on the other winemakers of the area, too, such as using only Sangiovese Grosso grapes and really low vineyard yields. A tradition that today puts this company at the forefront of Italian wine making excellence. The enterprise now boasts around 25 hectares of land with vineyards that are more than 80 years old. They are cultivated exclusively with the Sangiovese Grosso variety at extremely low yields of around 40 to 50 quintals per hectare to give a total production quantity of approximately 80,000 bottles. Of these, only 10,000 bottles are the famous Riserva, which is produced exclusively from the best crops. Rosso di Montalcino di Biondi Santi is made exclusively from Sangiovese Grosso grapes from the company’s youngest vineyards. The grapes are harvested by hand and taken to the winery, where they are fermented in cement tanks at a controlled temperature. They then undergo ageing in large Slavonian oak barrels for one year. In the glass, this wine is a bright, intense ruby red. On the nose, fruit-rich notes of currants and small red berry fruits immediately emerge, followed by more floral notes of violet and rose, and finishing with gentle hints of spices and minerals. On the palate, the wine is dry and elegant with a silky and refined tannin taste and a pleasant freshness that helps to balance out its fullness. All of these characteristics make this Tuscan red a wine to open for important special occasions. Read more Read less
THE WINERY

Biondi Santi

In the area of Montalcino and Pienza in the province of Siena, is the Biondi Santi winery, on the Tenuta Greppo estate. In an area known worldwide for its fine Tuscan red wines, Biondi Santi stands out for its Brunello, which has been produced, innovated and improved since the 19th century. After Clemente Santi started winemaking thanks studying the Sangiovese Grosso typical of the area, the winery still remains closely linked to its origins and history, recognised internationally for the production of sophisticated, elegant and refined wines. All while paying the utmost attention to organic and sustainable viticulture. With 25 hectares of vineyards, the estate produces no more than 80,000 bottles a year, including 10,000 of Brunello Riserva. The prestige of these Tuscan wines is influenced by many factors. Only the best grapes are selected, from vineyards that are at least 10 years old - and 25 years old for the Riserva. After being harvested completely by hand, the grapes are destemmed, crushed and fermented, which takes place at a controlled temperature in cement vats and tanks. Finally, the wine ages in oak barrels and is bottled no less than four years after harvest. Name and address of producer/distributor: Biondi Santi - Villa Greppo, 183, 53024 Montalcino - Siena - Italia. Products from this winery should be stored in a cool, dry place away from heat sources.
