TASTING NOTES

The Donnafugata company was established in Sicily by the Rallo family whose passion for wine making has elevated the perception of Sicilian wine all over the world. Ben Ryé is one of Italy's best-loved sweet wines. A fine Zibibbo passito produced on Pantelleria, a small island between Sicily and North Africa, also known as the Black Pearl of the Mediterranean. Pure lava stones reveal the volcanic nature of the island, which is also famous for its lack of water and the constant strong winds that blow there all year round. Ben Ryé, from Arabic, means 'Child of the Wind'. Harvesting is done by hand and takes about four weeks. During fermentation of the must, the partially dried grapes are added several times, for approximately one month. Ageing is for about 8 months in stainless steel, followed by 12 months in the bottle. Golden in colour and with luminous amber reflections, Ben Ryé presents an intense bouquet of apricot and candied orange, dried figs, honey and hints of Mediterranean maquis scrub, while on the palate it offers its renowned freshness to balance the sweetness. Excellent paired with blue cheese and foie gras, but also worth trying with dry pastries and fine chocolate. Exceptional when enjoyed on its own, to be sipped leisurely. Read more Read less
THE WINERY

Donnafugata

Donnafugata's wines interpret Sicily and passionately describe its sensory universe. Donnafugata was established in Sicily from the initiative of a family with over 160 years of experience in quality wine. The company was founded in 1983 from the Rallo family’s historic wine cellars in Marsala and in the Contessa Entellina vineyards, in the heart of western Sicily. In 1989, Donnafugata arrived on the island of Pantelleria where it began producing sweet natural wines. The name Donnafugata, literally "woman on the run", refers to the story of Queen Maria Carolina, wife of Ferdinand IV of Bourbon, who fled Naples due to the arrival of Napoleon's troops in the early 1800s and took refuge in that part of Sicily where the company vineyards are located today. The face of a woman on each bottle has thus become the symbol of Donnafugata, inspired by the life of Gabriella Rallo, who gave up her job to devote herself to the Contessa Entelline vineyards, a typically male sector, thus becoming a pioneer of Italian female viticulture. With its Sicilian red wines, Donnafugata represents the excellence of Made in Italy, creating a perfect dialogue between art, wine and sustainability. The high quality of these wines is closely linked to a sustainable approach, aimed at safeguarding biodiversity, which is essential for creating authentic wines that are attentive to organic and sustainable viticulture. Name and address of producer/distributor: Donnafugata - Via Sebastiano Lipari, 18, 91025 Marsala (TP). Products from this winery should be stored in a cool, dry place away from heat sources.
