TASTING NOTES

The Braida winery was established in 1961 by Giacomo Bologna, an experienced winemaker who inherited a passion for wine making as well as a vineyard from his father Giuseppe, whose nickname “Braida” gives the wine its name. Giacomo followed in his father’s footsteps and is now recognised as the father of modern Barbera. Indeed, it is thanks to Giacomo that this grape variety went from being considered very poor quality to being internationally recognised as rich and suitable for the production of great red wines. All this happened thanks to the intuition of using small French oak barriques for the refinement, elements completely unknown in the Piedmontese viticulture of the time. Today the company is spread over 56 hectares of vineyards scattered in the municipalities around Asti. The vineyards are mostly home to Barbera, but also grow international varieties such as Chardonnay, as well as small native varieties such as Grignolino, Brachetto and Moscato. This led to the production of a range of prestigious and excellent quality wines. Brachetto d'Acqui comes from the vineyards that extend from Acqui Terme towards Liguria, an aromatic grape rich in scents and aromas, with a pleasant floral aroma that makes it a perfect wine to drink chilled as an aperitif or dessert. Once the 100% Brachetto grapes arrive in the cellar, they are fermented in contact with the skins for 36/48 hours at a controlled temperature, in order to release the classic rosé colour and a fairly high sugar content. Then the second fermentation takes place in an autoclave before ageing in the bottle. The colour is light ruby red with purple reflections, with a dense and lively foam. The nose is fragrant and aromatic, with hints of ripe red fruit and dried rose. In the mouth it is sweet, soft, delicate, sparkling, persuasive, with a long aromatic persistence. These characteristics make this Piedmontese sparkling red wine suitable as an accompaniment to desserts at the end of a rich Sunday lunch. Read more Read less

Braida

Behind the name of the Braida winery lies the story of a passion: a passion for excellence, not only between the rows of vines but in all fields. Giuseppe, forefather of the Bologna family, was in fact nicknamed 'Braida', after a famous footballer, because of his habit for playing ball in the piazzas of Rocchetta Tanaro, a small town in the Monferrato area of Asti. Thus, as well as his father's nickname and love of sport, Giacomo Bologna inherited the wit and perseverance needed to take care of a large Barbera vineyard in the hills of Rocchetta. Such gifts mean that he is still a champion in the field of Piedmontese wines. The first harvest of Braida wines dates back to 1961, when Giacomo decided to bottle the lively 'La Monella', which won him the gold medal at the Douja d'Or national wine competition in Asti. Armed with lengthy research and tenacity, he dared to age Barbera in French barriques, a technique not practised in Italy at the time. With his famous Bricco dell'Uccellone, he went beyond conventions and convictions of the past, demonstrating the high level of quality, finesse and character achievable with this grape variety. Today, Giuseppe and Raffaella Bologna, the third generation of Braidas, continue the process of conquering the noble status of Barbera with hard work and dedication, claiming the banner over other wineries abroad. Thanks to their precious team, every day they consolidate the value of their heritage made up of biodiversity and production rigour, genius, imagination and respect for tradition. Name and address of producer/distributor: Braida - Via Roma, 94, 14030 Rocchetta Tanaro AT. Products from this winery should be stored in a cool, dry place away from heat sources.
