TASTING NOTES

The Braida winery was established in 1961 by Giacomo Bologna, an experienced winemaker who inherited a passion for wine making as well as a vineyard from his father Giuseppe, whose nickname “Braida” gives the wine its name. Giacomo followed in his father’s footsteps and is now recognised as the father of modern Barbera. Indeed, it is thanks to Giacomo that this grape variety went from being considered very poor quality to being internationally recognised as rich and suitable for the production of great red wines. All this happened thanks to Giacomo’s innovation of using small French oak barriques for the refinement, elements completely unknown in Piedmontese viticulture at the time. Today the company is spread over 56 hectares of vineyards scattered around Asti. The vineyards are mostly home to Barbera, but also grow international varieties such as Chardonnay, as well as small native varieties such as Grignolino, Brachetto and Moscato. This led to the production of a range of prestigious and excellent quality wines. Barbera d'Asti "Bricco dell'Uccellone" is perhaps the winery's most iconic wine, and one of the world's best-known Barberas. It is named after an elderly lady who lived near the cellar who always used to wear black and thus was nicknamed "l'uselun," or the big bird. The 100% Barbera grapes come from vineyards in Rocchetta Tanaro, located about 150 metres above sea level, grown on rich sand and clay soils that give the wine great concentration and freshness. The must ferments with maceration on the skins for about 20 days before ageing for 12 months in French oak barrels plus another 12 months in bottle before release. Very intense ruby red in colour with garnet reflections. The aroma is rich, complex, with remarkable concentration and depth; hints of red berries and small fruits are particularly striking, with sweet spices, vanilla and liquorice in the background. Exhibits a generous flavour, full body and remarkable structure. A Piedmontese red perfect served with a rich Sunday lunch especially when paired with red meats. Read more Read less
THE WINERY

Braida

Behind the name of the Braida winery lies the story of a passion: a passion for excellence, not only between the rows of vines but in all fields. Giuseppe, forefather of the Bologna family, was in fact nicknamed 'Braida', after a famous footballer, because of his habit for playing ball in the piazzas of Rocchetta Tanaro, a small town in the Monferrato area of Asti. Thus, as well as his father's nickname and love of sport, Giacomo Bologna inherited the wit and perseverance needed to take care of a large Barbera vineyard in the hills of Rocchetta. Such gifts mean that he is still a champion in the field of Piedmontese wines. The first harvest of Braida wines dates back to 1961, when Giacomo decided to bottle the lively 'La Monella', which won him the gold medal at the Douja d'Or national wine competition in Asti. Armed with lengthy research and tenacity, he dared to age Barbera in French barriques, a technique not practised in Italy at the time. With his famous Bricco dell'Uccellone, he went beyond conventions and convictions of the past, demonstrating the high level of quality, finesse and character achievable with this grape variety. Today, Giuseppe and Raffaella Bologna, the third generation of Braidas, continue the process of conquering the noble status of Barbera with hard work and dedication, claiming the banner over other wineries abroad. Thanks to their precious team, every day they consolidate the value of their heritage made up of biodiversity and production rigour, genius, imagination and respect for tradition. Name and address of producer/distributor: Braida - Via Roma, 94, 14030 Rocchetta Tanaro AT. Products from this winery should be stored in a cool, dry place away from heat sources.
