TASTING NOTES

Cantina Orsogna is a cooperative in the Abruzzo region, located in the town of Orsogna in the province of Chieti, in the Maiella National Park. It was established in 1972 and today has around 600 staff working over 1,200 hectares of vineyards, producing around 1.7 million bottles, not including bulk wine. For the last few years, most of the production has been certified organic, and 300 of the winery’s 1,200 hectares of vineyards are certified biodynamic. This makes it the largest Italian producer of this type of wine and one of the biggest producers worldwide. Pecorino Civitas by Orsogna is an Abruzzo white made from 85% Pecorino grapes along with other authorised varieties. The must obtained from these grapes ferments due to indigenous yeasts and rests in stainless steel tanks at a low temperature for around one month. It then undergoes ageing in stainless steel followed by a further maturation in the bottle. In the glass, it has an intense straw yellow colour. On the nose, it is complex with floral notes and hints of white-fleshed fruit. On the palate, it is fresh, intense, and full-flavoured with impressive body. This is a perfect aperitif wine for enjoying with friends. It expresses itself best when paired with formal or informal fish-based dishes or shell fish, given the length of its palate and its full body. Read more Read less
THE WINERY

Orsogna

The Orsogna winery, founded in 1972, is one of the most important wineries in the production of Abruzzo wines. About 15 years ago, a separate winery was created with the Lunaria project with the aim of producing biodynamic wines that would best enhance the territory of the Chieti hills, within the Maiella Park. Spontaneous fermentation, special care for indigenous varieties and minimal intervention in the vineyard and wine cellar make the Lunaria project the largest Demeter project in Europe. The Orsogna vineyards extend over the territory of the municipality of the same name and some neighbouring villages. Here, traditional vines, such as Montepulciano and Trebbiano, lie beside indigenous specimens, including pecorino, primitivo, but also pinot grigio, from which an excellent spumante is made. The intense passion dedicated to working the land is transmitted in every grape, an expression of a production system that respects and emphasises the importance of the environment. At Cantina Orsogna, sulphites are used to a limited extent, calibrated according to the wine to be produced: lower for the Lunaria line, totally absent for the ZeroPuro line. Cantina Orsogna's wines, mostly red, are distinguished by their enviable character and precision and are loved by both the most refined and the simplest palates. Name and address of producer/distributor: Orsogna - Via Ortonese, 29, 66036 Orsogna (CH). Products from this winery should be stored in a cool, dry place away from heat sources.
