TASTING NOTES

On the Italian wine scene, Gianfranco Fino is certainly an exception. The kind that people like. Gianfranco bought his first vineyards in 2004 and managed to establish his wines after only a few years as a benchmark – both for the region, but also southern Italy as a whole. Its pioneering early vintages are remembered, where the company produced garage wines. Literally. Until 2016, the winery was located inside a garage annex belonging to the owner. The winemaker, a native of Manduria, has contributed like few others to the rediscovery of Puglian wine and the renaissance of Primitivo, demonstrating how much class and elegance are hidden in a variety that for a long time was forced to remain in the background. His SE comes from more recent vineyards, again planted with very dense Puglian bush-trained vines, which reach a density of 12,000 plants per hectare. This results in each vine yielding a small amount of grapes, very concentrated. The SE, Primitivo di Manduria, was bottled for the first time in 2012. Unlike the ES, this more modern version of the primitivo by Gianfranco Fino matures for nine months in barriques for first and second ageing. Impenetrable and deeply coloured in the glass; the fruity notes of cherry, blueberry, blackberry and morello cherry rise on the nose, set against a balsamic and sweet spice background. On the palate the wine is considerably dense yet smooth, leading to a very pleasant finish with good acidity to balance the taste. Undoubtedly an iconic bottle from Southern Italy, and one to make an excellent impression at a Sunday lunch, and with which to pleasantly accompany red meat dishes. Read more Read less
THE WINERY

Gianfranco Fino

A meticulous search to find the perfect vineyard has led to the rise of Gianfranco Fino's winery, which began in 2004. Taking into account precise characteristics that could give his wine a unique personality, the choice fell on a fifty-year-old Primitivo vineyard in Puglia. Gradually, with the intention of protecting old vineyards and keeping their uniqueness alive, Gianfranco Fino's holdings have expanded to include vineyards between 50 and 90 years old, lying on red soil and rocky outcrops. Together with his wife Simona, he takes great care and attention with each vine, from which he ensures a low yield in order to preserve its exceptional nature. In the Gianfranco Fini winery, interventions are kept to a minimum, favouring only those essential to the natural enhancement of the product, in which the strong territorial identity is inherent. Gianfranco's hard work has been repaid with the great recognition obtained by his Es Primitivo di Manduria Doc, an excellent red wine, and by the title of best Apulian company obtained just a few years after he started his business. Name and address of producer/distributor: Gianfranco Fino - contrada Lella, sn, 74024 Manduria (TA). Products from this winery should be stored in a cool, dry place away from heat sources.
