TASTING NOTES

La storia di Walter Massa è legata a doppio filo con il Timorasso e il Tortonese. Siamo a Monleale, in provincia di Alessandria. Alla fine degli anni ’80 assistiamo alla rinascita e al recupero di una varietà a bacca bianca che stava cadendo in disuso in favore di altre uve come Cortese e Barbera capaci di produrre di più dando meno problemi in vigna. Massa invece ha creduto in questo vitigno e nel suo terroir e, tra gli anni 80/90, ha deciso di reimpiantarlo e vinificarlo con successo finché a inizio anni 2000 ha iniziato a vinificare separatamente i diversi cru di famiglia. L’azienda vigneti Massa nasce da una tradizione di vignaioli che fonda le sue radici nel XIX secolo e guidati da un grande amore per la propria terra. Oltre a vini bianchi, produce anche vini rossi a base Barbera, varietà classica del territorio. Oggi l’uva Timorasso è fiore all’occhiello della scena enologica sabauda e si sta facendo spazio sul piano internazionale. Il Timorasso è decisamente connesso con il territorio dei colli tortonesi e coltivato qui da tempi immemori. La sua riscoperta ha portato la sua superfice vitata da 300 ha nell’87 agli attuali 1500 ha. È un vitigno poco produttivo e incostante ma resistente alle malattie. Produce in vino molto secco, pieno, strutturato e con alto grado alcolico che si presta bene all’invecchiamento. Il Colli Tortonesi Timorasso Derthona è un bianco secco prodotto 100% da uve Timorasso. Vendemmia senza uso di macchinari, grappoli selezionati in cantina e fermentazione in acciaio a temperatura controllata a contatto con le bucce dalle 48 alle 60 ore. Il vino finisce il suo affinamento in vasche d’acciaio e cemento per altri 6 mesi. Di colore giallo paglierino. Al naso sentori intensi di agrume, mela golden, pera, pesca e camomilla. Cenno di affumicato. In bocca e di medio corpo e quasi cremoso, buona freschezza e delicatamente dolce. Finale sapido e minerale. Da gustare durante un pranzo domenicale con piatti a base di pesce e crostacei, soprattutto gamberi, scampi e sgombro. Walter Massa, a well-known wine expert in the area, rediscovers and revitalises Timorasso, a native white grape variety. As Vigneti Massa demonstrates, Piedmont is not only the land of great Piedmontese reds, but also of excellent white wines. The vines have been family-owned since 1879, today extending over an area of more than 23 hectares in the hills of Monleale (Alessandria). The land is cultivated with care, with attention not only to the ancient traditions of the place and the Massa family, but also with a focus on protecting the land. Today, the winery offers not only Derthona, the typical white wine and symbol of the winery, but also high-quality red wines produced from the Freisa, Barbera and Croatina vineyards.
